    The company was then developing the Renault 12. In 1966, Dacia was set up as Uzina de Autoturisme Pitești (UAP) with technical support from Renault and the main factory was completed in 1968.

    In the 1960s, Dacia started to license Renault cars which, with some modifications, were developed into its own models. The Renault 12 was to be produced, but before that production started, the Renault 8 was produced under license under the name Dacia 1100. The components were imported under the license agreement from Renault in France. Nicolae Ceaușescu drove the first Dacia car, a Dacia 1100, in August 1968. The name Dacia comes from the historic Roman province of Dacia which is seen as a historical Romania.
