Volkswagen abbreviated VW, is a German motor vehicle manufacturer headquartered in Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony, Germany. Founded in 1937 by the German Labor Front under the Nazi Party and revived into a global brand after World War II by British Army officer Ivan Hirst, it is known for the iconic beetle and serves as the flagship brand of the Volkswagen Group, the largest automaker by worldwide sales in 2016 and 2017. The group's largest market is in China, which supplies 40 percent of its sales and profits. Its name comes from the German-language terms Volk and Wagen, which translate to "people's car" when combined.

The brand introduced its first crossover SUV in 2002 starting from the Touareg, a full-size luxury SUV. The expansion of the brand's SUV continues with the launch of the Tiguan, a mainstream SUV in the C-segment in 2007. By the mid-2010s, the company has settled on one SUV in each class of cars that can justify one, which the brand called "SUV offensive". Between 2017 and 2020, the brand has aggressively expanded its SUV range by increasing its number of models from 2 to 8 models, excluding its derivatives, ranging from B-segment, C-segment and D-segment SUVs that include global models and regional models. Volkswagen also started manufacturing derivatives of its SUV models with a rear sloping roof marketed as coupe SUVs that had gained popularity in China, the largest single market for the brand.

Volkswagen plans to offer over 30 SUV models worldwide by 2025, contributing 50 percent of its global sales. Volkswagen also expects SUVs to lead the ID. family, its future range of electric vehicle models.
